Two
winds together.
One
rumbles through the canyon,
The
other whispers.

Having
just turned 64, I feel I’m approaching one, two cars at the most until I’m done
driving. And who knows, with the pace of development of self-driving cars combined
with the need to take measures against global warming, my driving days may be
even shorter.
Right
now, I’m driving a Honda Fit. It’s a very good car and serves my purpose, but
it doesn’t come close to any car that I dreamt about as a youth. In fact I’ve
never come close to driving one of those with a very small exception which I'll
mention shortly.
My
dream cars were the Alpha Romeo Spyder as seen in The Graduate and the Jaguar
XKE as seen in Harold and Maude. Not sure there’s a car out there today that
has the same panache or could rev my engine like those classics.
The
closest I ever got to sit and drive a car similar to one of those was my dad’s
Austin Healy. But that I only got to drive back and forth in his driveway while
he was away at work.
Starting
in my late teens I turned away from unaffordable cars to more bang for the buck
motorcycles, but when a near dream bike, the BMW 1300RS tried to kill me I
jumped ship and went back to four wheels.
That
was until last year when I got the itch to feel open on the open road again and
got what seemed to be a compromise vehicle; the three wheeled Can-Am Spyder F3.
This vehicle is a dream I never would’ve considered as a youngster, not even
sure when they came into existence, but I’m loving it.
Would
I trade it for the shiny red two-seater that Dustin Hoffman looked so cool in,
or the long-hooded Jag? Of course. But that’s not going to happen. Which may be
all for the best because having a woman sitting behind you, touching you and
not talking to you is much more of a dream scenario than having them sit beside
you and telling you to slow down.
