This pandemic is producing a lot of little bizarre “not in my lifetime” stories.

One of those I read the other day was about a set of sisters; one who died from the Spanish flu and the other who just died of the Corona virus. That’s not going to happen to too many families.

While not quite as dramatic or time spanning, living through the OPEC oil embargo and now the negative pricing of oil, is also one of those forehead slappers.

I remember in the late 70s or early 80s pushing my motorcycle slowly along in a line significantly longer than what In and Out has one a good Friday afternoon lunch day, waiting to get gas. I can’t remember if I had an odd or even plate, or even how long the rationing of gas lasted but, just like now, it seemed people adapted pretty readily to waiting in line. Back then we thought that signaled the end of cheap gas forever.

Now it seems oil is in such little demand it’s not only being given away, producers have to pay storage facilities to take it off their hands.

Of course it doesn’t much matter if gas only cost a dime if you don’t have a nickel. But hopefully we’ll come out of this a little ahead of the curve and prices will still be depressed while demand catches up.

It might also help us buy a little time to prepare for another of those crises that we know is already upon us  – global warming.
