Michael: Literally a Hole in the Wall
The three dogs of death
Pin their ears back and attack
With a vicious joy.

Once you lived somewhere long enough to meet a few locals, a few of those individuals are bound to tell you about their favorite hole in the wall restaurants. Wednesday, Kimme and I were lucky enough to find one on our own by literally running into a “hole in a wall“.
About a month ago, Phillip, founder of the Volcan Hiking Club, gave me a map of a half paved/half farm road run that he thought I would enjoy. And by that he meant enjoy in the trail runner very steep sado-masochistic way. He was right. It’s just that, an hour uphill run that never declines but does almost level out in enough spots to catch your breath.
What he didn’t mention, and probably doesn’t know about, is that on the very steep descent at the end of the run is a small, literally hole (and I mean no door) in the wall eatery that if you didn’t have to stop to cross a road, your momentum would lead you right into.
The outside of this place is bare cement and I’m guessing was recently added onto the produce transfer station it’s attached to so the wife of the person who runs it wouldn’t be bored to tears. Inside the hole is a room with about 6 picnic tables and the kitchen, which lies behind an orange wall that tells you you’re in CafĂ© Fanichell. But if you didn’t know about this place, or run into it, there’s no way from the road you would ever know it’s there.
And for $4 we enjoyed some rice, great fried eggs and pretty tasty lentils. And we didn‘t even have to go out of our way to find it.
