Michael: Black Friday

The moon, Venus and
Mars are shining brightly in
The clear mountain air.

We figured here in the country side of Panama we would be far removed from the hyper-consumerism that follows Thanksgiving known as Black Friday. Not quite.

Although the country is pretty busy with the end of school year promotions and celebrations and preparing for the holiday of their Independence from Spain, some shop keepers still managed to squeeze in references to Black Friday.

On our way to our run we saw large banners hanging from some shops advertising Black Friday sales. And, adding to the quirkiness, not only is  “Black Friday”  written in English, but some of these banners are hanging from shops that sell “Ropa Americana”. They are clothing stores that are stocked full of America’s gluttony spill over.

We were also stopped on our run by an out of his trunk shoe peddler selling Under Armor running shoes. Which there was no point looking at because, as I struggled to tell the man in Spanish, I had already fallen prey to Black Friday’s pull and purchased a couple of pairs of shoes that morning over the internet.
