The beautiful Totumas Cloud forest borders L’Amistad National Park which is maintained by both Panama and Costa Rica. Inside the park near the Totumas Eco Lodge is a large ranch that is run by Mr. Vega. His ranch will eventually be grandfathered into the park when his family no longer continues to work it. It won’t be taken through eminent domain, but neither can he sell it.
Visiting Mr. Vega’s homestead was like walking back in time. It has no indoor plumbing. No electricity. No gas. He has no car. He cooks over a wood stove. He built his place by himself with wood he cleared creating the pasture for his cattle. He lives by himself with his cattle and his dogs.
It’s a rustic way of living some people fantasize about. Far too simple for my taste, but for a man in his 70s he seems full of verve and quite content.
