Michael: Off the Beaten Path
The warm dry rhythm
Of the day quickly becomes
An afternoon storm.

If you are a runner coming to the Panama Highlands, you might feel that you’d have to exchange your running workouts for arduous hikes. You could, but you shouldn’t feel you have to.
Oddly, here some of the most beautiful roads are much more off the beaten path and have far less traffic, both in terms of cars and pedestrians, than the well known trails. And they are runnable whereas most of the trails are not.
All most all of these country roads were suggested to me by members of the Volcan Hiking Club. If you’re ever fortunate enough to visit this area, Google them and ask what roads they would suggest. If you’re on vacation but want to see some of the most beautiful country in the highlands, there’s no reason to leave those road running shoes at home. The runs are beautiful, challenging and safe.
