Funny how time marches on and how slow it can seem to be marching when you’re watching a marching band.
Today was the 2nd annual Tierra Alta Flower Festival. And, though it coincided with the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks, only a vague and I’d be willing to bet coincidental reference was made to the U.S. That was by one of the bands using a Souza composition to march to.
The reason I’m pretty sure this wasn’t any salute to the U.S. was because in front of the band was a group of boys dressed sharply in white shirts and black pants goose stepping and behind them were children paired off in boy/girl couples that were dressed in traditional Spanish colonial attire performing a traditional Spanish dance. Then came the band. Behind the band was a group of young ladies doing a coordinated flag routine using the regional flag. So if it was in any way intended to comment on the U.S. it was done in a pretty high minded very very insider kind of way.
How the whole shebang fit together at all was a head scratcher to me. But it was apparent that everyone had spent a considerable amount time practicing. They looked good and sounded decent enough. I’m sure their families were satisfied, and that’s enough to ask of a marching band.
